How contrast ratios work

WCAG defines minimum contrast ratios to ensure text is readable for users with low vision or colour-vision deficiencies. The thresholds differ based on text size and conformance level:

  • WCAG AA — Normal text ≥ 4.5:1

    Text smaller than 18 pt (or 14 pt bold)

  • WCAG AA — Large text ≥ 3:1

    18 pt or larger (or 14 pt bold or larger)

  • WCAG AAA — Normal text ≥ 7:1

    Enhanced — typically required for public services

  • WCAG AAA — Large text ≥ 4.5:1

    Enhanced large text threshold
